Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij’s future has been the topic of speculation for some time as he’s out of contract this summer but the latest update involves a possible move to Barcelona.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport De Vrij had all been set on a move to Inter Milan but is now hesitating as he’s received a proposal from Barcelona which he’s considering.

Barcelona have plenty of central defenders currently with Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti first choice and backed up by Thomas Vermaelen and Yerry Mina. There’s also Marlon Santos out on a two-year loan at Nice.

Having said that there’s some doubt if Vermaelen will stay after this season, due to a lack of game time, and Pique is 31 and will need replacing at some point.

De Vrij has proved himself to be one of Serie A’s top defenders and as a free agent he’s a really attractive proposition this summer.

Yet at 26 he’s going to want regular football and at the moment that looks more likely to be on offer at the San Siro rather than the Camp Nou.

De Vrij is also prepared to wait until the end of the season to see if Inter qualify for the Champions League, they are currently fourth with 10 games left to play.

Should Barca go for De Vrij this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
