Barcelona vice-president Jordi Mestre says he’s “very sorry” after the club failed to land Antoine Griezmann after months of speculation he would move to the Camp Nou.
Griezmann has now extended his contract at Atletico Madrid and Mestre expressed regret over the whole saga and also revealed his displeasure at Gerard Pique.
The Barcelona defender’s TV company produced Griezmann’s video where he finally announced he would be staying at Atletico Madrid, although Pique has insisted he didn’t know about Griezmann’s decision.
“We respect the decision of Griezmann to renew with Atletico Madrid, like we respect the decision of any player about his future,” he said.
”We informed Atletico of our interest in an official way.
”We want players who are committed and determined to succeed here. I am very sorry and we regret that our members have been disappointed by the final resolution [of this saga].
”We have told Pique that his participation [in Griezmann’s documentary about his future] caused surprise and uneasiness both at the club and among Barcelona fans.
”We will speak internally to Pique and [Samuel] Umtiti and we will not make any more public evaluations on the matter.”
