Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been talking about Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt and says the club have been admirers for a while.

The centre-back has reportedly attracted attention from a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Barca, and is widely expected to leave Ajax in the summer.

Bartomeu was happy to admit Barcelona are admirers of De Ligt but say there’s nothing doing with regards a transfer at present.

“We have followed De Ligt for a while. It’s true he’s a player we like, but Barça also have other important players in the squad,” he said.

”We will look at more things from March or April. We’re delighted to watch him play and admire him, but there’s nothing more at the moment.”

Barcelona have already spent €75 million to bring De Ligt’s team-mate Frenkie de Jong to the Camp Nou in the summer, De Ligt is expected to cost even more.
