Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt has fuelled speculation he could join Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona next season with his latest comments.

The centre-back spoke about his team-mate after picking up a player of the season award from Dutch football website Voetbal Primeur.

De Ligt says De Jong got his vote in the awards and would like to keep on playing with his team-mate who will join Barcelona on July 1.

“I think I voted for Frenkie. I think he has developed very well this year. He deserves the move to FC Barcelona.

“Will I play with him there? It would be nice to play with Frenkie in a team, but I don’t know if it will happen.”

There is no question De Ligt will leave Ajax in the summer transfer window but speculation continues to rage over his next destination.

The 19-year-old is one of Europe’s top young talents and has been linked with most of the continent’s big clubs, with Barcelona still reportedly very much in the running for his signature.
