Barcelona have officially signed 22-year-old left-back Junior Firpo from Real Betis on a permanent transfer, the club announced on Sunday. Firpo joins on an 18 million euro deal with a possible 12 million in variables, and his five-year contract has a 200 million euro release clause.

The two clubs started to talk about a possible deal back in July, with the negotiations going slowly at first as Betis demanded the full 50 million euro release clause and Barça were willing to wait for other clubs to give up on the transfer so they’d become the only bidders. The strategy worked, and the Blaugrana managed to close the deal for half the original price without including any young players of their own in the deal, which was one of Betis’ demands when the talks first began.
Junior Firpo is expected to attend the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Arsenal on Sunday and travel with the team for next week’s tour of the United States. Firpo has no injury issues and should be available for both friendlies against Napoli in America.
