Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has said he thinks Barcelona weren’t too serious about trying to bring him to the club this summer.

Wijnaldum was one of several players linked with a move to the Camp Nou after Ronald Koeman was appointed manager after Quique Setien’s dismissal.

The 29-year-old has now opened up on the rumors while on international duty with the Netherlands.

“I don’t think it was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened. There was nothing concrete, I didn’t have to think about it. I will stay on what it looks like now. It can of course change in the coming months, you never know that with football.”

Barcelona ended up having a pretty quiet window in terms of new arrivals because of the club’s difficult financial situation. Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia emerged as the club’s top targets and may be on the radar again when the window reopens in January.
