Memphis Depay admits he was close to joining Barcelona

Memphis Depay and Barcelona were heavily linked this summer. The two were paired pretty much since Ronald Koeman joined Barcelona. The back and forth ended up with nothing happening, and Memphis Depay commented on the possibility this week.

“I was quite close to Barca.”

“Only technicalities stopped me from signing. We don’t need to get into all the details but there were certain rules that unfortunately stopped them from buying us.”

“Now I’m focused on Olympique Lyon and I want to be important there again. Later we’ll see how things go, but it’s possible the interest there will remain.”

There just wasn’t enough movement out of Barcelona to give them funds to afford anything this offseason. Depay not coming to the club was a product of that.
