Francisco Trincao’s agent, Bruno Carvalho Santos, has said Barcelona have been following the young forward since 2018 but decided to sign him in January after his form “exploded” for Braga.

The Catalan giants confirmed in January that the 20-year-old will move to the Camp Nou in July on a five-year deal worth €31 million and will have a release clause of €500m.

Carvalho Santos said Barcelona had been watching Trincao for some time and weren’t the only club interested in the youngster.

“After the U19 Euro Cup in 2018, where Trincão was the best forward and Portugal won against Italy, I had a meeting with Barça’s technical structure. Since then, Barça began to follow him more closely. They watched him in every game,” he said.

“Then, between December and January of this season, he literally exploded and Barça decided to sign him immediately. They beat all the other clubs who were interested in him.”

The 20-year-old was in great form for Braga before the 2019-20 season ground to a halt due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

Trincao netted his first goal of the season in December in the Europa League win over Slovan Bratislava and went on to score six in his next 13 games for the club.
