Brazilian starlet Yan Couto has explained why he opted to snub interest from Barcelona and move to Premier League side Manchester City instead.

The 17-year-old is the latest player to be dubbed the ‘next Dani Alves’ and was linked with a move to the Camp Nou earlier this year.

Couto says he spoke to Barcelona and was thinking of heading to the Spanish champions before City boss Pep Guardiola intervened.

“I had a good conversation with Barcelona and I thought I would go there,” he said. “But Then Manchester City appeared and showed me how things would be there.

“At first, they wanted to loan me out straight away, but then I spoke with Guardiola. He told me that I would do preseason with the first team and from there it would depend on me.

“Guardiola was very attentive and said that he was really happy I was coming to the club. It was the best decision for me.”

Couto is due to arrive from Brazilian side Coritiba in the summer and will sign a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.
