Barcelona are closing in on agreeing a new contract with teenage star Ansu Fati that will see the forward sign a new five-year deal.
The two parties have reached “an agreement in principle” to extend Fati’s stay at the Camp Nou for another five seasons, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Coach Ronald Koeman confirmed the news in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday when asked about the speculation.
He said, “I know they’re close to agreeing a new contract and it’s big news for Barca because we’re talking about someone that can mark the club’s future.”
Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany has been in Portugal with Fati’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to close the deal and it could be announced before El Clasico.
MD reckon all that needs to be done now is for the paperwork to be agreed and signed off before Fati’s renewal will finally be made official.
News that Fati has extended his contract will be a big boost to Barca and follows on from Pedri’s renewal last week. The midfielder has also signed on with the Catalans until 2026.
Fati is just back from a long injury lay-off but has already made an impact, scoring on his comeback against Levante and again on his first start versus Valencia.
There has been rumors since Fati returned that he’s wanted by some of Europe’s top clubs, but those rumors should end when he puts pen to paper on his new Barca contract.
