Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets says Ansu Fati’s new contract at the club is a “huge joy” after the 18-year-old signed on with the Catalan giants until 2027.
Fati’s renewal is a big boost to the club at a time when Barca is suffering financially and seemingly unable to invest in big names potentially for some time to come.
Busquets has made it clear he’s delighted that Fati is staying and says the players will try to help and protect the 18-year-old as much as they can.
“He has renewed and is a huge joy,” he said. “We all have to be aware of his age and that he comes from a very complicated injury. We have to help him and not burden him with pressure or excessive prominence.”
The captain also spoke about Barcelona’s next match against Real Madrid and feels three points would be important to boost confidence after a tricky start to the 2021-22 campaign.
“Winning would give a lot of confidence and would bring us closer to the top positions,” he said. “We have not started as we wanted, but we are not too far from Madrid and the leaders, it is a long-term race. It would be important for the team and for confidence.
“We have to focus on ourselves. We have both been quite inconsistent. In the last game we had to be more forceful. The image has to be much better, that of a team that wants to compete for everything. It is not only efficiency. There are aspects to improve, we have to be more solid and we have to correct things to be more competitive.”
