Barcelona have reportedly decided to extend Emerson Royal’s contract at the club until 2026 after meeting with the Brazilian’s agent on Thursday.
The Catalan giants spoke to Federico Pena to discuss the defender’s role at the club after bringing him back from Real Betis, according to Mundo Deportivo.
There’s been a bit of debate about whether Emerson will stay or be sold on, but the report suggests the right-back is in Barca’s plans for 2021-22.
The club also wants to extend his contract before the defender arrives at the club this summer.
The 22-year-old is currently away on international duty with Brazil after replacing the injured Dani Alves in the squad.
Emerson has already made it clear how desperate he is to succeed at the Camp Nou. He spoke to reporters this week about joining the Catalan giants.
“For me it is a dream to play for Barcelona. And if this possibility has appeared it was fundamentally as a consequence of my work, my determination and the evolution that I have had during the time that I have played in Betis. I am very happy. The recognition that Barcelona has had in me has been key in my career, now I hope to show my work at Barça.”
The update suggests we should get to see Emerson in a Barcelona shirt next season, and he’s likely to compete with Sergino Dest for the right-back slot.
