Brazil coach Tite has admitted that Barcelona legend Xavi was offered the chance to work with the team in a coaching capacity.
Tite spoke about Xavi at a press conference on Thursday night and confirmed speculation that the Al Sadd coach had been offered a role on his team. He said. “Xavi? Yes, we invited him to work with us.”
The Brazil coach didn’t go into much more detail but it seems Xavi was lined up to replace Sylvinho. The plan was for Xavi to work alongside Tite for the 2022 World Cup and then take over the head coach role.
It’s not the first time Xavi has turned down a job offer. He also rejected the chance to manage Barcelona after Ernesto Valverde was sacked in 2020 but admitted it was “too early” in his career to return to the Camp Nou. There have also been rumors he turned down the chance to manage Dortmund.
Rumors Xavi would return to Barcelona emerged again over the summer, particularly as he flew into the city with a suspicious number of suitcases for a holiday, even though the former midfielder had just signed a contract extension with Al Sadd.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has since confirmed Koeman will stay on for another season, but you can bet the Xavi rumors will be back once again if the Dutchman does not deliver success.
