Rumors of a swap deal involving Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez ramped up on Wednesday with all sorts of reports flying about regarding the possibility of the two players changing clubs this summer.
It all kicked off with Cope reporting that the two clubs were “very close” to agreeing the swap. Griezmann is apparently on holiday in Ibiza with Koke and is waiting for the call from Atletico, while Saul is believed to be happy to move to the Camp Nou.
Many other outlets were quick to jump on the news and report that a deal was indeed in the offing.
Barcelona and Atletico are in advanced talks for swap deal between Saúl and Griezmann! Both players gave the green light in the last hours.— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 14, 2021
Barça and Atléti now negotiating on price tags. Barça want money included.
Liverpool and Chelsea keen on Saúl if deal will collapse.
Things then got even more interesting when Catalunya Radio added that Atletico defenders Mario Hermoso or Renan Lodi could also be included as part of the deal.
That rumor was swiftly shot down elsewhere but there have been rumors previously that because of the differences in valuation between the two players, Barca could ask for clash plus Saul in exchange for Griezmann.
At this point it’s not clear if it would be a straight swap, two transfers (a bit like Pjanic and Arthur last year) or Saul and another player for Griezmann. No doubt there will be more rumors to come.
Offloading Griezmann seems to be essential for Barca to reduce the wage bill, while Ronald Koeman has been said to be keen to bring in another midfielder after missing out on Georginio Wijnaldum which seems to be where Saul fits in.
