FC Barcelona is asking its veteran players formed in its academy to take a paycut in order to continue at the club. It’s been reported that Lionel Messi has already agreed to a substantial wage reduction, and it seems Gerard Piqué will also agree. The situation is less clear with Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, and Jordi Alba.

However, some reports have said Alba is the least willing to agree to such a reduction. For that reason, he has been linked with a move away from the Camp Nou. Rumors have placed Valencia’s José Luis Gayà as a possible replacement, although no serious negotiations have taken place.

Now, it’s being reported that several of the club’s key staff are looking to move Alba on. The left-back had a great tournament with Spain at the Euros, but he is 32 and reliant on pace. A decline could be around the corner. There have also been questions asked of his mentality in key moments when the Catalans have been under severe pressure.

Barcelona will be unable to register new signings or indeed Messi himself unless high earning players either accept salary cuts or accept moves to new clubs.

It seems that if Alba maintains his position that he will not agree to less in wages, then his future is with a different shirt.
