Alejandro Balde broke into the Barcelona first team last season and outperformed expectations to such a degree that the club was comfortable enough to allow their legendary left-back Jordi Alba to leave and hand the keys to the kingdom at the position to the young Spanish international.
But in his first season as a full-time starter at left-back, Balde has undoubtedly struggled to play consistent, high-level football. His role in Xavi Hernández’s system is very demanding and Balde is yet to fully develop into the two-way force his coach needs him to be, but his potential is undeniable.
So much so that there is serious interest from the biggest clubs around Europe, especially the Premier League, and there was some speculation late last week that Barça could be willing to cash in Balde’s value next summer as the club continues to navigate a tricky financial situation and would profit in a big way from a Balde sale.
However, there appears to be no substance to the rumor. That’s according to the transfer guru himself, Fabrizio Romano, who wrote about Balde’s future this week and made it clear that Barça’s faith in the 20-year-old remains just as strong as it was this summer, when he was given a long-term extension until 2028.
“Balde signed new important deal at Barça in September, so, no – nothing at all. He’s a key player for Barça and his extension was another message that they want him to be a key part of the project in the future.”
