The season-ending knee injury suffered by Gavi in Spain during gave the rumor mill even more ammunition to link a number of players with a move to Barcelona in the upcoming January transfer window, and there have been a lot of different reports about the club’s strategy for the upcoming weeks.

La Liga’s salary cap rules allow Barça to bring in a new player who costs a maximum of 80% of Gavi’s wages, and the latest rumors say that the Blaugrana are debating whether to sign a new midfielder to replace Gavi or to use the available cap space to register the contract of summer signing Vitor Roque and provide a much-needed boost to the attack.

Barça manager Xavi Hernández was asked about the club’s transfer plans in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s La Liga trip to Rayo Vallecano, and he naturally did not want to reveal anything about his or sporting director Deco’s strategy for January.

“I am in contact with the president and Deco every day. We will announce what we think is appropriate in due time. They know where I stand, I know where they stand, and we’ve reached common ground. Now we’ll see what we can do and if we can sign a new player.

“This is not the time to talk about the market, honestly. We have Vitor Roque, there are other players we are looking at, but we are thinking about Rayo, then Porto, we have Girona soon. There’s no point to talking about the market right now and we’ll announce something once we have it.”

The latest reports that addressed Xavi’s stance in the issue of replacing Gavi claim that the coach wants Deco to sign a new midfielder, and Xavi’s comments appear to confirm those rumors. We won’t know for sure until the window opens, but it looks as though the “Midfielder or Roque” question will definitely dominate Barça’s transfer news over the next couple of months.
