Barcelona first team coach Xavi Hernández spoke to the press for the first time this year ahead of the team’s opening match of 2024 away to Las Palmas, but much of the conversation was about transfers, as is usually the case with Barça and especially during a transfer window.

The Blaugrana have already brought in Vitor Roque and are now working to register the Brazilian in order for him to make his debut as soon as possible, but they’ve also been linked with other names. The biggest rumor concerns Girona midfielder Aleix García, and Palmeiras youngster Estêvão ‘Messinho’ who is the latest Brazilian gem wanted by every big team on the market.

Barça are reportedly waiting on a €40 million cash injection that didn’t arrive and for which they have sued German company LIBERO regarding the sale of Barça Vision, and that money would be enough to open up salary cap space to register a new signing. There is very little hope that money will arrive during January, however, so the prospects of Barça making a move in this window are pretty much non-existent barring a big change of circumstance.

Xavi seems pretty aware of that scenario, which is why he refused to even entertain the questions about Aleix García and Messinho during his presser.

Xavi badly wants a midfielder with the season-ending injury to Gavi, the poor performances of Oriol Romeu and the constant injury issues that plague Pedri, but it doesn’t appear as though the coach will get his wish and will have to find a way to work with what he’s got.

As for Messinho, who reportedly wants Barça over every other team in Europe and is willing to wait for his dream move, it sure sounds like he’s not coming any time soon if the current Barça manager barely knows who he is.
