Ever since Pep Guardiola was confirmed as the latest manager of UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich, the media have been speculating about whether or not Guardiola would return to his old club, FC Barcelona in search of players. However, everyone all but ruled it out, after all, Guardiola is an ardent Barcelona supporter, and he wouldn't want to harm his former employers would he? As it turns out, it couldn't be more from the truth, as Pep confirmed his interest in Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
Speaking in a press conference this morning, Guardiola confirmed that the rumours were true; "I want Thiago" was his answer to a question about the Spanish midfielder, and Pep went on to state that he has asked Bayern Munich to try and sign him. There is "no news" yet, but a public confirmation of his interest in Thiago is sure to sway the youngster's opinion, and let's be honest, it seems like it's just a matter of time before Thiago will be confirmed as the latest (or first, depending on whether or not you believe that Pep was behind Bayern's purchase of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze) signing of Pep Guardiola's reign at Bayern Munich.
In fact, Guardiola's insistence on the signing of Thiago seems somewhat similar to Tito Vilanova's insistence on signing Thiago Silva -- as Pep stated that "Thiago is the only player I want" and that it's "Thiago or no-one".
Somehow, someway, it seems as though the future of Barcelona's brightest La Masia talent now rests in the hands of the Bayern Munich board and it's safe to say, that fact sucks.
