A few takeaways from a very disappointing Saturday night at Camp Nou

Barcelona suffered the first loss of the 2016/17 season on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Deportivo Alavés at Camp Nou in a very strange match, with the Catalans struggling throughout the 90 minutes and playing bad defense to concede two goals and lose at home. Here's a few lessons from a very bad loss:

1 - Hashtag It Happens

Seriously. It happens. This was one of those games, a night where a combination of bad luck, bad play and bad circumstances lead to an ugly result. It happened to every great team in the history of football, and Luis Enrique's side shouldn't be immune to that. The natural instinct is to overreact to what took place on Saturday, but it's just a part of sports. Bad losses will happen, and they did happen in the first two seasons of the Lucho Era, and look how those seasons turn out. Bad games and losses are part of sport. It just happens.

That being said...

2 - Luis Enrique cannot rotate too much

Lucho fell in love with his rotation system when it worked to absolute perfection in his first season, saving the Gala XI for March, April and May, when Barça completely dominated and won both La Liga and the Champions League thanks to a deep, talented squad. Once again he does have a deep, talented group that allows him to make rotations and have strong teams for virtually every game — which was the case on Saturday.

There's just one difference from the 2014-15 rotation system to this one: that squad had Xavi and Pedro, two great players who were totally familiar with the tactics and knew exactly what to do when they played. They are now gone, six players were signed and four of them played against Alavés with very little experience in the Barça system. It's too big of a change. The eleven from Saturday did not know each other or the exact responsibilites they have in each position. With such a big change using so many unexperienced players, you will have guys out of sync and having problems to understand each other on the pitch.

A rotation is not changing starters just for the hell of it. It's using your bench smartly to save your best players' fitness for the more important games while staying strong for the next match. In five or six months, once the new signings are completely settled, you can rest all eleven starters and have a reserve team capable of playing great football. Until then, don't love your rotation too much, Lucho. It'll hurt you.

3 - Mascherano cannot play on the right side

The Little Sheriff is one of the world's best defenders, but Saturday was just another proof that Mascherano just has to play on the left side of central defense. There is such a thing as muscle memory, and there are movements you do on the left side that can't be done on the right, and vice-versa. Just because Mascherano is right-footed it doesn't mean he can play on both sides, and the first goal was a clear sign of someone struggling to position himself in the box and conceding space to the striker (who ironically scored on Masche's left side). Masche is a monster, but only a left-sided one.

No one was happy, obviously

Barcelona suffered a shocking, disappointing loss against Deportivo Alavés on Saturday at Camp Nou, and the Blaugrana were obviously not happy after the match.

The players usually flood social media after most games, but only the captain showed up on Twitter after Saturday's loss:

A game to be forgotten by the Blaugranas.

This was a match to be forgotten. While most of us can agree with Lucho's decision of rotating the squad, the result fell tremendously short of what wanted to be accomplished. On paper, Alavés was quite possibly the most appropriate game in which to do some squad rotation. Unfortunately, the many changes implemented by the skipper were possibly too aggressive, and our beloved Barcelona team was much weakened. There was no facet of the game dominated by the Blaugranes, and our lack of control was met by the iron-hard will and organisation of an Alavés team that seem ready to give it their best in their stint in the Primera División. Nevertheless, rotation is essential to oxygenate a team and allow for a strong competitive showing in the final third of the season.

Our success in the transfer window that added tremendous depth and quality to the squad basically set in stone, determined, that Barcelona would rotate throughout the season. You don't buy such young, promising players to sit them on the bench and run Messi et al. into the ground. If Luis Enrique didn't lose faith in rotating the team after that devastating loss in the 2014-15 season at the beginning of the new year, in which we lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad, then he won't be disheartened with this loss. Yes, it stings, but I'd rather lose at the beginning of the season and learn from it, than at the end from exhaustion.

Watching this Alavés team play, I was struck with another thought. While I'm in no way jubilant after this Barcelona defeat, it excites me to see the quality of players in football nowadays. Every team has a chance to pull off an offset, and some teams can even have an incredible, magical season and win a title. As long as this trend continues, the sport we love will continue improving, and we will be treated to more and more fantastic games.

But now, let's get down to business and do what we came here to do...

Irish Goat's Three Gamboling Goleadores!

This is in no way an easy game in which to decide who should be a Goleador. Nobody really excelled. Alas, I have to choose some folks, so here goes. As always, don't hesitate to leave a comment with whom you think should've been a Goleador.

1st Goleador: Arda Turan

Not an easy game at all in which to attack. For starters, Alavés employed a five defender backline, and yet they didn't get complacent with their numerical superiority and stayed incredibly sharp throughout the whole game. The few times we did manage some aggressiveness, Turan was by far the best player in our offense. Despite being subbed in the second half, I believe he played better than Neymar and Paco.

2nd Goleador: Ivan Rakitić

Ivan Rakitić continued his tremendous run of form and was disruptive in defense, and tremendously aggressive in offense. Unfortunately, he had nothing to show for it. Nevertheless, more often than not he will have many successful games if he continues to play at this level.

3rd Goleador: Lucas Digne

Of all the players employed today by Lucho as part of his rotation scheme, Lucas was probably the one that played the best. We all know offensively he is not as incisive as Jordi, but on defense he is outstanding, and it showed again today. Here's to enjoying more of the talented, young Frenchman.

That's it for today! Hope you have a great week and as always Visca Barça!

A review of Barcelona’s shocking defeat to Alaves

In a shocking turn of events, newly promoted Alaves would go on to clinch a victory against Barcelona at home, after a 10-year long absence, from top flight football.

The team-sheet had plenty of rotation, with Neymar slotting right into the XI after his return, and Paco Alcácer getting his first start of the season in the Blaugrana. Jasper Cillessen would slot in for the injured Ter Stegen, and plenty of starters would be rested, in what was expected to be a routine victory for the reigning La Liga champions.

Barça would start aggressively, with Neymar and Denis Suarez combining well just outside the box, before Neymar would attempt a mazy run and find himself in front of a wall of defenders, just outside Alaves’ box.

As the game settled into a steady rhythm, Barcelona continued to dominate possession while Alaves looked set to sit deep and absorb pressure, waiting for any chance to counter. Ten minutes into the game, Alaves did just that when they took their first shot of the game through Barça’s gaping defence, straight at Cillessen, who held onto the ball with ease. A couple of minutes later, Denis Suarez would latch onto a Digne through-ball and take a shot that would deflect off a defender, and go off target.

Alaves displayed astounding discipline, as their 5-4-1 barely allowed any chances to the home side. The few times that Barça managed to thread a pass through Alaves’ back-line, the shots were usually off target. Stuck outside the box, Barça attempted to capitalise on the free-kicks they were being awarded by playing a practiced set-piece routine, in which Neymar would square his free-kick to the other end of the box for a waiting Aleix Vidal; Unfortunately, Vidal would fumble, and put his shot off target.

Forty minutes into the first half, the Camp Nou came to a stunned silence, as Alaves would make a no-look cross into the Barça box, which Deyverson would slot into goal with a calm first touch. Despite Neymar trying to strike back with a quick counter, his off-target header inside the box, did little to change the scoreline.

Barcelona were down 0-1 at half time.

An unchanged Barcelona stepped back onto the pitch and almost immediately Barça would equalise from an unusual vent, as Jeremy Mathieu went unmarked on a corner, and slotted a Neymar ball straight into the net. Barça had drawn level, and the Camp Nou breathed a sigh of relief. Jeremy Mathieu came close to giving Barça the lead as he was on the receiving end of another beautiful delivery from Neymar from a corner, just moments after the first goal, only to fumble and strike his shot off-target.

In what was a controversial call, Alaves would bury the ball into the net after a lobbed set-piece delivery, only for the goal to be ruled out as offside. A few more minutes into the game, Arda Turan would make a cross that found Paco Alcacer, whose shot would dangerously drift off-target, despite the angle being tight. Alaves’ counter would result in a late challenge from Mascherano, which got him into the referee’s book for the first time this season with a yellow.

As it began to rain at the Camp Nou, things started to look bleak for the Blaugrana, as the chances had begun to dry up, and there seemed to be no way through Alaves’ stubborn defense; Iniesta and Messi were already warming up.

As the clock hit the 60th minute, Lucho made his first substitution, introducing Lionel Messi into the game for Denis Suarez, shortly followed by Iniesta, who came on for Arda Turan.

These changes however, did little to impact the game, as Ibai Gomez would go on a mazy dribble to get past Mascherano and Aleix Vidal, before slotting his shot on target; Despite getting his fingertips to the ball, Cillessen could do little to stop the ball from rolling into the far post.

A second goal from Alaves was all the trigger Luis Enrique needed, to introduce Suarez into the game. However, the changes would have little effect on Alaves, as their defense continued to display tactical discipline that would rival some of the best defenses in Europe. Their two lines of Defense and Midfield, would squeeze into one like a vice every time the ball went past their midfield, which continued to lead to an over-turn of possession. Barça had the ball, but there seemed to be little they could do with it.

In the final moments of the game, Lucas Digne would find an open Lionel Messi, only for the Argentine to shoot off target, as the referee blew his whistle to bring the game to an end.

While it is easy to say that Barça had fielded a heavily rotated side with little time to gel, it is a bitter pill to swallow that Alaves were the better team on the night, having approached the game with a clear game-plan, and the tactical discipline to follow through.

However, those reasons are still perfectly valid, and shouldn’t be ignored; the season is long, and every squad needs time to understand each other and operate like a well oiled machine. There is still more to come from this Barça side. After a tough game, there is only one way for FC Barcelona.

Onwards and upwards.

Not the best day for Barça

Barcelona returned from the international break in a bad way with a 2-1 loss at Camp Nou to newly promoted side Alavés, with Mathieu scoring for Barça and Deyverson and Ibai Gómez giving the visitors the shocking victory. The Blaugrana had a poor performance from start to finish and Alavés deservedly won the game by perfectly executing a great defensive gameplan.

FIRST HALF

Barça did not have a good game from the start. The passing was slow, the movement was nonexistent, and because of Alavés' well-organized defense, there were no spaces to exploit. The game was quite boring for the first 30 minutes, but when Deyverson shocked the Camp Nou and scored a goal for the visitors, things got interesting.

Neymar and Rakitic had two great chances but their shots went just wide, but the final moments of the first half were encouraging and could be the start of something good to see in the rest of the game.

At halftime, a poor performance and a deficit to overcome in the second half.

SECOND HALF

An early goal changes everything, and Barça got one of those to kick off the final period. Just one minute into the half, Neymar took a corner-kick (wrongly given, should have been a goal-kick for Alavés) and found the head of Mathieu, and the Frenchman tied the game early and give Barça plenty of time to find a winner.

Mathieu, Neymar and Alcácer had good chances right after the goal, and Barça's winner looked just a matter of time and better finishing. But once again, Alavés shocked the Camp Nou when Ibai Gómez took advantage of a Mascherano mistake and shot past Cillessen to put the visitors ahead. Barça went forward trying to find a goal, but not even Messi, Suárez and Iniesta were able to win it for the Catalans.

In the end, a bad game and an upset loss at home. It happens.

The Blaugranes look to stay perfect in La Liga

The international break is over, and club football returns to our lives. The Champions League starts in just three days, but before the European Cup kicks off, Barcelona have an important La Liga match to play on Saturday.

You wouldn't think it's that important when Deportivo Alavés come to Camp Nou, since it's a team that just won promotion to La Liga and will probably fight against relegation all season. But while the opponent isn't the strongest, Barça are the last title contender to play this weekend, and both Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid have won their games, putting pressure on the Catalans to win their game as well and stay at the top of the table.

That's how La Liga works: you can't drop points in any game because the others will win and put pressure on you. This is why the Spanish league is fun, this is why Barcelona have to win today, and this is why you have to watch it. Don't miss it.

Not again, MATS...

Bad news for Barcelona. Marc-André ter Stegen is injured again.

The German goalkeeper pulled his hamstring during Friday's training session and is out of the La Liga match against Alavés on Saturday, the club announced. Barça's official report doesn't go into many details, but other reports from Mundo Deportivo and Diario Sport say it's only a minor straing, which means the German will not miss too much time.

However, given that the Champions League group stage opener is only three days away, Ter Stegen is doubtful to play against Celtic next Tuesday, but the keeper will work hard to be available for the European Cup game. New signing Jasper Cillessen is expected to start against Alavés and should be the favorite to play also against Celtic, and the Dutch keeper will have an early opportunity to show his talents.

This is the second injury suffered by Ter Stegen in the first month of the season, as the German missed two weeks with a knee injury. Hopefully this is the last injury he suffers all campaign, because he's supposed to be the undisputed starter after Claudio Bravo left and we cannot have an injury prone goalkeeper.

Please get better soon, MATS.
