A quiet night for Valdés in the Barcelona goal, who was predictably impressive on the rare occasions that Espanyol did force him into action. As per usual, his passing was good – and Valdés even collected a potentially dangerous cross as well to secure his eighth clean sheet of this La Liga season, and 11th overall (in all competitions).

Dani Alves missed last weekend’s win over Real Valladolid through injury, and only received the medical green light to return to action on Sunday morning – but it was impossible to tell from his performance at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat. Alves was dominant at both ends of the field, completing a team-high six tackles and creating a number of chances for his teammates. If not for Villa’s profligacy in front of goal, the Brazilian would have certainly registered an assist – no wonder Martin Montoya has to settle for a place on the Barça bench.

Another solid display from Piqué, who appears to be back to his best another relatively inconsistent season with the Blaugrana. While the statistics dictate that Piqué and Mascherano don’t necessarily form the best partnership (this was the first La Liga clean sheet that the two have managed as Barcelona’s starting centre-half partnership since Barça’s 1-0 win over Valencia, way back in September 2012), it’s clear to see that Piqué enjoys playing alongside the Argentine, and who knows? Maybe that will be a factor as the Blaugrana finally looks set to address their defensive frailties this off-season.

As if we needed any more proof that Barcelona need to do all in their power to keep Thiago, the young midfielder goes out and gives us a performance like this. As much as Song anchored the midfield, it was Thiago who made the difference on Sunday – excelling in each and every facet of the game. You need someone to pass the ball? Thiago is your man. You need to someone to win the ball? Thiago is your man. You need someone to compete in the air? I’m sure you get the picture. Of course, Thiago isn’t quite the finished article just yet – he still loses possession more often than we are used to seeing from a Barcelona midfielder for example – but he does that innate ability to simply take over a game, and as long as he is patient, it won’t be long before he takes over the Barça midfield.

In fact, one could even argue that Thiago even upstaged Andrés Iniesta on Sunday. It’s not that Iniesta didn’t play well, but it seemed as though he was lacking that something extra; that cutting edge he usually brings to the Barça midfield. There were moments of brilliance – his 44th minute shot for instance – but for the most part, Iniesta looked to be going through the motions, which is understandable given the amount of minutes he has played this season (and indeed given the amount of minutes he will be expected to play in the Confederations Cup).

With Neymar set to join this summer, there is only one place up for grabs in the Barcelona attack, and judging by the last few weeks, it’s going to go to Alexis Sánchez. His close control and an explosive turn of pace created the first goal on Sunday; it’s just a shame that Alexis didn’t have any more chances to add to his tally. While David Villa was struggling to find the target, Alexis was 100% in front of goal. One shot, one goal – that’s exactly the kind of productivity we need from whoever Tito chooses to partner Messi and Neymar next season. He does lose half a mark for all those turnovers though.

Would Barça be able to register their third successive Catalan derby win, or would Espanyol end Tito Vilanova’s hopes of equalling Jose Mourinho’s 100 point record?

The atmosphere was electric – despite the guard of honour – and Espanyol tried to match that enthusiasm with a good start of their own. Their pressure resulted in an early chance for the hosts, and unsurprisingly, it was a set-piece that caused the Blaugrana some problems. Taken quickly – and smartly – Joan Verdu floated the ball into the heart of the Barcelona penalty area, and found Sergio Garcia unmarked by the penalty spot, but the cross was just too high for the Catalan, who headed the early chance over Victor Valdés’ crossbar.

Barcelona recovered, and in truth, Espanyol made it relatively easy for them to do so. Despite creating that early "chance", Aguirre’s side didn’t commit too many players found, weary of being caught out at the other end. As a result, Barcelona were able to exert control of possession – and ultimately, the match as a whole – even translating that early dominance of possession into a one-goal lead. There had been warning signs for the Espanyol defense, as Alexis Sánchez had nearly converted a Dani Alves cross in the ninth minute (but the Chilean was flagged for offside, and stereotypically wasted the chance anyway), but Sánchez didn’t make the same mistake five minutes later when he was presented with an excellent chance by David Villa.

Exchanging a one-two with his strike partner, Alexis cut inside from the left-hand side of attack and displayed superb close control to corral Villa’s return pass, before following up his chest control with an equally fantastic finish, caressing the ball into the far corner of Cristian Alvarez’ net. Fourteen minutes had been played at the Cornella-el Prat, and Barça were ahead, courtesy of Sánchez’ 11th goal of the season.

The goal prompted Espanyol into action; now they were a goal behind the hosts decided to press the Blaugrana – forcing a couple of small errors at the defensive end. Needless concessions of possession, cheap set-pieces; the Barcelona backline was clearly a little flustered by this pressure without the composure of either Sergio Busquets or Xavi in midfield – but Espanyol couldn’t capitalise. Aside from Raul Rodriguez’ wild effort from long-range, Espanyol couldn’t even get off a shot, let alone trouble Victor Valdés. And at the other end, Espanyol were just a few inches away from conceding their second of the evening.

Alex Song was the creator, lifting a diagonal through ball over the last line of defense to find the run of former Arsenal teammate, Cesc Fàbregas. It was a pass that Arsenal fans saw often from Song last season, with many resulting in a goal – and we could have seen another tonight, if not for the frame of Alvarez’ goal. Perhaps Cesc Fàbregas should have done better? His connection certainly wasn’t as clean as he might have hoped – but it was a tough chance for the midfielder.

Espanyol finally registered their first shot on target just a minute later, as Diego Colotto forced a comfortable save out of Victor Valdés – but it was a mere blip for the Blaugrana who resumed their domination by creating a couple of late chances in the first-half. The first would have made for a spectacular goal, as Cesc Fàbregas attempted to turn in Dani Alves’ cross with an acrobatic volley (even if he missed dismally, it was a nice try from Fàbregas) and the second was equally impressive – this time for all the right reasons, as Andrés Iniesta came desperately close to scoring a sensational curling effort. However, despite their best efforts, the Blaugrana only went in at the break with a one goal lead. Could Espanyol stage an unlikely second-half comeback?

Espanyol started the second half in a similar fashion to the first – taking the game to the Blaugrana in the early stages, before Barça ultimately took control once again. Cristian Stuani wasted a half-chance just a few minutes into the second-half, firing high and wide after a pass from Javi Lopez; before David Villa (of all people) missed an easy chance to double Barcelona’s lead. It was a glaring miss from El Guaje – who has scored just one goal in the past two months. No wonder Barcelona were so keen to secure the signing of Neymar...

Villa tried to make amends for his miss a few minutes later – in similar fashion to Cesc Fàbregas’ acrobatic volley, with identical results – and missed yet another chance on 71 minutes, as Alvarez stood tall in the centre of the goal to deny Villa’s close-range right-footed effort. Well, when it isn’t your night, I guess it really isn’t your night. With rumours of a possible summer exit, that might be the final time we see Villa in an away fixture for Barcelona – as Pedro replaced El Guaje with less than twenty minutes to play.

Espanyol, who also took that opportunity to make a change of their own (former Barça player Simao replaced another former Barça player, Victor Sánchez), were still in the game, but with the clock winding down, their chances of salvaging a draw were fading fast. And thanks to a moment of indiscipline from Wakaso, those chances faded completely in the 81st minute. Reacting to a foul on Alexis Sánchez, Wakaso (who had already committed three fouls without repercussion) proceeded to argue with the referee, picking up a yellow card for his troubles. Usually, that would be the end of it, but for whatever reason, Wakaso continued to argue – and picked up a second yellow card for his persistence. Espanyol were down to ten men, and Barcelona sensed that this was their chance to secure the three points.

On came Cristian Tello and Xavi Hernández, with Alexis Sánchez and Andrés Iniesta the players to make way – and within moments, Xavi made an impact, teeing up Pedro for Barcelona’s second goal of the evening. It was a perfect pass from Barça’s midfield maestro, and a great finish from Pedro, who has now scored in successive La Liga matches for the first time since January. Ultimately, that would be the last real piece of action in the match; Barcelona picked up another three points, marching closer to the 100 point milestone – and kept a rare clean sheet in the process. Alexis Sánchez scored, Pedro scored, and Neymar has signed – all in all, I’d say it’s been a productive weekend for the Blaugrana.

Next weekend, Barcelona host Malaga in the final match of the 2012-13 La Liga season, but until then, Visca el Barça!

A chance to predict the score of Barcelona's La Liga clash with city rivals Espanyol at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat

After an age of negotiations, and a few days of waiting, Neymar has finally signed for FC Barcelona! Oh wait, that doesn't matter yet, what really matters at the moment is whether Barcelona can equal the points record set last season by Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid - and therefore whether Barcelona can defeat city rivals Espanyol in tonight's Catalan derby. With just two matches remaining in this season's La Liga, the Blaugrana are tantalisingly close to reaching that century mark for the first time in their long, and illustrious history - all in Tito Vilanova's first season in charge. Despite missing a few matches as he battled a tumour in New York, Tito Vilanova has masterminded Barcelona to arguably their best ever La Liga campaign - and unbelievably still receives criticism from some Cules. Sure, he's not perfect, but judging by our record in this season's La Liga, he's pretty damn close.

Standing between Barca and a place in the record books is Espanyol - and if they can't get the job done tonight, then there's also the small matter of a last day encounter with Malaga (in what should be Manuel Pellegrini's final match before departing for Manchester City). So, in other words, Barcelona still have work to do. Espanyol are a tough opponent, and almost always raise their game against the Blaugrana - and any side coached by Javier Aguirre is going to at least cause Barca some trouble. Make no mistake, this match is going to be physical; and can Barcelona cope? In the past couple of weeks, Barca have been lucky enough to secure victory - even when they haven't played very well - if they want to register their fourth successive win, they will almost certainly have to raise the intensity of their play. Can they do it? Will Barcelona beat Espanyol and move three points closer to that 100 point milestone, or will Espanyol finally get the better of the Blaugrana? Predict the score of tonight's clash by voting in our poll below, and commenting with your prediction. As always, best of luck!

A preview of Barcelona's Catalan derby match with city rivals RCD Espanyol at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat

Forget about the UEFA Champions League final, and forget about Neymar; there are still two matches left in this season’s La Liga – including a Catalan derby as Barcelona prepare to take on Espanyol at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat. While the title may be secure, Barcelona still have the 100 point record to play for, and what better way to move one step closer to equalling that feat than defeating city rivals Espanyol in their own backyard? Under the guidance of experienced Mexican coach, Javier Aguirre, Espanyol have steered clear of relegation and even flirted with European qualification at one stage – but the Periquitos have faltered in recent weeks, winning just one of their last six matches. Will they be able to return to winning ways tomorrow, or will Barcelona register their third consecutive El Derbi victory?

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Lionel Messi is still sidelined with a thigh injury (although that didn’t stop Argentina from calling him up for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Ecuador), while both Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal are unlikely to feature again this season – with the latter seemingly headed for the exit at the Camp Nou. However, Adriano and Dani Alves have recovered from their respective injuries and therefore could feature at some stage tomorrow evening.

Victor Valdés should start in what is shaping up to be his final away match for the Blaugrana – after more than a decade of service and countless trophies, Valdés is destined to leave the Camp Nou, possibly as soon as this summer, and possibly to AS Monaco. While it is a shame to see such a loyal servant leave the club, it’s also an opportunity for Barça to create a new "hero" between the sticks (with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen top of most Culés’ wishlists) – and let’s be honest, do we really want to keep a player who clearly isn’t dedicated to the team? Not only that, but do we want to keep a player who seems intent on harming the club, by reportedly insisting that he should be allowed to leave on a free transfer, a year before his contract expires? Of course, we’ll be forever grateful for Valdés’ service, and some of his more memorable, possibly trophy-winning displays, but after the last few weeks, I certainly won’t shed too many tears when Valdés does leave.

There’s a possibility that Dani Alves will start at right-back tomorrow after missing last weekend’s win over Real Valladolid – although many Culés would prefer to see Martin Montoya start after his impressive performance in that 2-1 victory. Jordi Alba is a virtual lock on the other side of defense, while Gerard Piqué is still in line to start, despite missing training this week for a trip to Los Angeles. Javier Mascherano made his triumphant return from injury last weekend, and will probably retain his place in the starting XI – even if would make more sense to see Marc Bartra given a rare chance to shine.

Sergio Busquets is favourite to start at pivote – and has lost just once in his entire career against Espanyol (in 11 meetings), providing two assists in the process. Only against Real Mallorca has Sergio Busquets been more productive in a creative sense – and it’s easy to see why he thrives in these matches, he is a local after all. Just like Xavi, who boasts a similar record against Espanyol, and similar to Busquets, Xavi also raises his game for these derby encounters – he has scored more goals against Espanyol than any other team, with six goals to his name against Barça’s city rivals. Will Xavi start tomorrow? Usually, we would all be in favour of Xavi taking the field – but not now, not with Thiago Alcântara ready to step up in his place, especially if that gives us a better chance of retaining his services for the immediate future. Andrés Iniesta is likely to start in the other midfield position, despite suffering something of a slump recently, having registered just two assists in the past three and a half months of La Liga action. Should we be concerned? Probably not. Should we be playing Thiago more often? Almost certainly...

With Lionel Messi sidelined, Cesc Fàbregas should fill in as Barça’s false nine, and I am very much in favour of Tito starting Cristian Tello on the left – I’m sure Tello would relish an opportunity to start against his former club after being left out of the squad the last time these two sides met, back in January. Alexis Sánchez should, at least in my opinion, fill the other attacking berth, but it seems as though the Chilean is still behind Pedro in the pecking order – and given that Pedro scored last weekend, I can’t see that has changed in the past week.

ESPANYOL

Espanyol secured the long-term future of talented left-back Victor Alvarez this week, but Alvarez has not made the cut for this weekend’s match against the Blaugrana (and neither has Martin Petrov for that matter). Influential centre-half, Hector Moreno is sidelined with a muscle injury but Victor Sánchez, Juan Forlin and Joan Capdevila are all back after suspension.

Barcelona is two wins away from finishing the season on 100 points, which would tie Real Madrid's record from last year. While it's a nice stat, is it really all that important?

"The points record in the league belongs to me," Jose Mourinho stated with authority during his famous press conference after being eliminated in the Champions League. He was talking about the 2011-12 season, when Real Madrid reached 100 points in the league.

FC Barcelona sit on 94 points with two games to go. Here is a team that could, if not take it away from him, match it, and just one year after he had achieved it. It really calls into question if these records are really all that special. The strength of Real Madrid and Barcelona relative to the rest of the league is unprecedented.

It probably started in 2009-10, with Pep Guardiola improving Barcelona to 99 points, just two seasons into his appointment (in the year before he joined, they had won 67). Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini chased Barca to the wire and finished on 96 points, an improvement of 16 points in his first season in charge.

The fact that Pellegrini remains the coach with the highest winning percentage in Real Madrid history, and was sacked in one season, should tell you about the expectations in the league.

Since 2010, both teams have cracked 90 each year, though Madrid will not this season. This won't go down as one of Barca's best seasons ever, 100 points or no, which should make one wonder, again, if that record is all that important.

Sure, it was one of Mourinho's proudest achievements, along with a Copa del Rey and three CL semifinal appearances. Sure, it would bring a lot of satisfaction in matching that record. Mourinho isn't exactly popular in Barcelona.

And given the choice between having it and not having it, obviously you'd rather have it. But is it worth going exerting the players? Eliminating chances for youngsters?

Isn't the key winning the title? One point, five points, 100... does it matter?

In my opinion it does, but comparatively little. It's something fun, for the record books, but it's of little importance ultimately compared to actually winning La Liga.

Of course, it shows amazing consistency, in perhaps a strong year for La Liga as Real Madrid struggled to pick up points against feisty opposition and as Atletico Madrid legitimately challenged for second. But the true spoils for that are a trophy, not a number.

Mourinho having that record by himself is not the end of the world. And given the current state of La Liga, it's not hard to picture either Real or Barca breaking 100 in the near future, either.
