A recap of Barcelona's disappointing loss to Real Valladolid.

After a midweek run of international fixtures, Barça were hoping avoid the dreaded "FIFA virus". Unfortunately this didn't happen as Barcelona looked sluggish and stumbled to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a goal from Fausto Rossi.

Barcelona opened the early stages with a good possession of the ball, knocking it about the park as they got used to the feel of the match. But the way they were set up, it suggested Tata Martino was aiming for a counter attacking approach, an approach that really doesn't play to Barcelona's strength. Neymar, Pedro & Messi all have the pace to play this way but the midfield doesn't, so they became isolated.

Neymar frequently attempted to cut inside, in the space that was left behind by Messi. While the Argentine attempted to burst his way past the defence from deep. But both found their paths difficult and they could only produce weak efforts. Pedro rarely saw the ball but when he did it didn't come to anything.

Valladolid also pressed well, trapping the Barça midfield in their own half and not allowing them to play their passing game. This also allowed Valladolid to recover the ball higher up the field and attack the Barça defence. After a couple of tame chances for both teams, the Barcelona defence went to sleep in the 17th minute. The ball ricocheted around the area before landing perfectly at the feet of Fausto Rossi. With no Barça defender between him and the goal, Rossi had no trouble firing the ball past a hapless Victor Valdés.

1-0 to Valladolid and the game seemed to playing out the way Juan Ignacio Martínez was hoping for. The continued counter attacking tactic continued to not work for Barcelona. The forwards rarely got a touch and Leo Messi had to drop deeper and deeper for the ball. When he did receive the ball, he was abruptly stopped as Martino's tactics appeared to be way off.

Eventually, Barcelona did revert to type and returned to their favoured possession based game. This did start to produce results as Barcelona carved out more attacking chances. A free kick on the edge of the area allowed Messi to strike at goal but it was easily saved. Then it was Messi again, breaking through the centre, ignoring the option of Neymar and blasting the ball at Mariño. A minute later it was Fàbregas who fired at goal, but it produce the same result as Messi's. Another minute later and the ball was in the net but Pedro was ruled offside.

Half time came and the most disappointing part for Barcelona was that Valladolid looked comfortable. They looked organised and the five man defence was doing it's job in exhausting Barça's attacking options. After the players returned, they showed no real upping of their game. They continued to retain the ball, but they never really looked like they were troubling Valladolid.

Messi did produce a good run though the centre of the field, but this run was matched by the defender and Messi had no choice but to power the ball into shins of Mariño. The resultant corner came to nothing as Valladolid forced Barça away from their goal.

Six minutes later, Dani Alves, who had been marked out of the whole game, popped up in the area. A Xavi pass struck the arm of a defender as it landed at Messi's feet. The referee waved play on and Messi found Alves who was open in the box. The Brazilian fired the ball across goal but no one was there to attack it as Valladolid cleared with ease.

Speaking of Brazilians, this really wasn't a good game for Neymar. Last week he made smart runs but was very wasteful when it came to converting the chances. Today, he just couldn't get into the game. Everything he tried was covered by Peña and the winger was eventually brought off in the 74th minute.
For me one of the most puzzling decisions that Tata made was in the 61st minute when he substituted Fàbregas for Alexis Sánchez. It wasn't particularly surprising to see Fàbregas go off as he hadn't had a brilliant game but it was surprising to see another wringer brought on. This meant Xavi was left in midfield with Messi dropping deep. Messi can play as a midfielder but he is strongest in the front three and doesn't offer the same control as Xavi, Iniesta or Cesc. This meant the workload on Xavi became greater and he struggled to link between the defence and attack.

Martino possibly tried to solve this as he introduced Sergi Roberto 72nd minute to add more control. But Roberto is still very young and wasn't very effective at retaining the ball in the centre of the pitch. He also brought Roberto on in the place of Piqué, leaving just Mashcerano in defence and Busquets dropping deep. This seemed to upset the team balance as Barcelona really struggled to switch the ball from defence to attack with the speed that they are used to.

The match continued to be played in the same style, Barcelona attacking a very organised defence and being unable to find a way through. With time running down, Barcelona seemed to throw everything at it but just couldn't find a way through. Dropping more points in one of the tightest title races ever. For me Martino got his tactics wrong today and it hurt Barcelona.

A chance to predict the score of today's La Liga clash between FC Barcelona and Real Valladolid

After bouncing back from a disappointing defeat against Real Sociedad with a comfortable 4-1 win over Almeria, FC Barcelona will be looking to temporarily reclaim control at the top of La Liga with a win today against Real Valladolid. The Blaugrana's trip to the Jose Zorrilla kicks off what is set to be another intriguing week of domestic fixtures, although one might argue that Barca's priorities may lie elsewhere with Manchester City set to visit the Camp Nou in just a few days' time. Still, with an important league fixture to contend with, Barcelona will likely be relishing the chance to continue building momentum as we approach the business end of the season.

A win tomorrow would not only serve to improve Barcelona's recent run of form, but it would also put them back atop the pile in Spain, for 24 hours at least. On Sunday, Real Madrid host Levante and are expected to win to retain first place, but you never know in football. Barcelona simply need to position themselves to be able to capitalise in the unlikely event that Levante do win a surprise point or three.

And yes, they will be without Andres Iniesta, while the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi and the majority of our Spanish contingent continue to work their way back to match sharpness following a tough trip of international travel, but the fact remains that Barcelona boast a talented side. A team that is more than capable of picking up the three points today. Predict the score of tonight's clash by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!

Barcelona hope to capture three more points to put pressure on league-leading Real Madrid. Will Barca's superior quality win out or will the "FIFA Virus" strike again?

"We have 19 finals ahead of us." That's how Cesc Fabregas describes every remaining game this season.

With the Liga race in a near-dead heat, even one slip could prove fatal. Barcelona trail Real Madrid by a single point, with Atletico Madrid lurking three points away from the top.

Barcelona travel to the region of Castile and Leon, where they will face a rather desperate Real Valladolid. The Pucela come into the match in the relegation zone and will need to scrap points if they intend on staying up.

During the week, we saw Barcelona players travelling all over to represent their countries. Will the extra jetlag wear on them? Or will their vastly superior technique secure 3 points?

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Victor Valdés, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fà bregas, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta and Pedro all joined the Spanish national team, who won 1-0 over Italy. Xavi was rested due to illness, but he might be recovered in time to pull the strings for Barca.

Lionel Messi was seen looking a bit sick in Argentina's draw with Romania. While it didn't look too serious, it may be enough to put him on the bench for this one. On the other hand, Martino may feel more secure with the main man heading the attack. His compatriot, Javier Mascherano, played the full 90 but should be fine.

Neymar was in vintage form for Brazil, securing a hat trick and the smiles of a young pitch invader. Dani Alves also featured. Both would want to continue their winning streak.

Alexis Sanchez helped an inspired Chile side that nevertheless succumbed to Germany 1-0. Alexis has proved vital this season, so Martino may opt for a spot on the teamsheet for him. Although, Pedro scored in midweek, so will Martino start him as well?

Sergi Roberto was also in action, with the Spanish U21s. He probably will have a spot on the bench - could he even start?

On another front, Carles Puyol announced his decision to leave Barca at the end of the season. Puyol made his debut against Valladolid many years ago, and also scored his first goal against that same team. Will he play against them one last time? Sadly, no, as he has been left out of the match squad due to injury.

Gerard Pique is in doubt due to an injury that kept him out of the international matches, but he did make the match squad. Otherwise, Marc Bartra would start in his place.

Jonathan Dos Santos continues to be out with a long-term injury, but should be back come April. Unlucky Isaac Cuenca is hurt yet again. Jose Manuel Pinto has not recovered yet from a back injury and is not part of the squad.

Andres Iniesta was originally part of the squad but had to be left out due to "personal reasons." Ibrahim Afellay replaces him.

Jordi Alba and Alex Song have also stayed home. Song featured in a rather lifeless Cameroon side that lost heavily to Portugal. He may have picked up an injury in the process - it's hard to think he's being rested for the match against Manchester City.

Otherwise, Tata Martino will have most of his squad ready and it will mostly be a matter of whom he will rest, bearing in mind the international break and the upcoming Champions League clash.

In many ways, it will be like the match against Rayo Vallecano - a relegation opponent before the big European date. But will the result be the same?

VALLADOLID

Valladolid are a lot tidier at the José Zorrilla Stadium, conceding 14 goals in 12 games, compared to 30 in 14 away from home. They'll need that form if they want to have any chance of getting a few precious points out of this game.

Jeffren Suarez, known in Barcelona for scoring goal number 5 in the famous 5-0 "Manita" victory over Real Madrid, will miss his return home due to injury.

Midfielder Victor Perez and little-used Swiss-Dominican defender Heinz Barmettler are still facing niggling injuries and have not been called up.

Interestingly, Omar Ramos, who is used to starting, is out of the squad due to a technical decision.

Javi Guerra is the key man in attack for Valladolid, scoring 12 goals in the league so far. Carlos Peña, the starting left-back, is unafraid of getting to the overlap and has provided 3 assists.

FORM GUIDE

Barcelona: WLWWLW

Valladolid: WDDLDD

LAST MEETING

FC Barcelona 4-1 Real Valladolid – 5th October 2013 – La Liga

Javi Guerra got Valladolid to an unlikely early lead, but they could not sustain it as Alexis Sanchez equalized. Xavi completed the comeback, before Alexis and Neymar turned it into a comfortable scoreline.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Valdés; Adriano, Mascherano, Pique, Montoya; Busquets, Xavi, Fà bregas; Pedro, Messi, Alexis

Valladolid (4-3-2-1): Mariño; Carlos Peña, Jesus Rueda, Mitrovic, Rukavina; Rossi, Alvaro Rubio; Rama, Oscar, Larsson; Javi Guerra

MATCH PREDICTION

It could prove a tricky match sandwiched in between the international break and a Champions League game... But Barcelona should still have enough quality to see off a team stuck in the basement.

Barcelona 3-1 Valladolid
