Review of the El Clasico action from a first-person point of view

The too long to read version of this article would be: "I was at the El Clasico". But I hope you continue reading as I extrapolate a little bit.

I'm going to start this article with an apology to, well, everybody on Barca Blaugranes, but especially to Arron Duckling with whom I regularly communicate, but we exchanged many email par day before my "trip", and not once did I mention where I was going. I always referred to my leave as the "trip" to whomever I discussed it with. It wasn't always easy, but somehow I always managed to call it the "trip". The reason behind it? Every single time I went to a Barcelona game incognito, Barcelona always won. We even pummeled Malaga once, something we would've gladly taken this season. Call me superstitious, crazy, or stupid, I wasn't going to jinx it (again). And the way this panned out I might actually start practicing this more often.

But back to the story at hand. As a matter of fact, this story begins on 7 December 2014, when I drew four tickets out of a hat for the New Year lottery held by Slovenia's only official Barcelona supporters club, Penya Blaugrana Eslovena Triglav. The top prize of the draw? A ticket for the El Clasico played on 22 March 2015. Late in January the draw was held. With 603 lottery tickets in contention for the top prize chances of winning were slim. But wouldn't you know it ticket number 0175, one of my four tickets, was picked out of the bowl. What followed was a mixed bunch of disbelief, elation and shock, and I honestly didn't really celebrate until the official results were released a couple of days later.

After the "honeymoon" phase ended I booked the flights, reserved an apartment with four great guys, and simply waited for the departure date to arrive. Being in Barcelona many times now you aren't drawn to the major landmarks as much as you were in your first trips. As you get to know parts of the city you start wondering the streets and discovering places not featured at the top of the "must visit locations" lists. But it's always a good idea to keep your camera on your person. I have to remember that one next time...

Waking up on Sunday was immediately different to the days before. The light-heartedness was replaced by anxiety and anticipation. The confidence in a positive result - a win - remained, but you started thinking about the starting lineups, the availability of Sergio Busquets, the inevitability of Real Madrid's hard tacking, Mateu Lahoz, weather, etc. Speaking of the weather, before leaving to Barcelona the weather report looked gnarly: 20 mph wind throughout my stay with heavy showers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with light showers on Monday. With a report like that the only thing that we could hope for was that the game would be played in nice weather because avoiding rain altogether seemed impossible. But somehow we woke up to a sunny Sunday morning with only a light shower in the night from Friday to Saturday before. Fears about the rain remained, but some of Barcelona's best El Clasico victories came in the rain, like the Manita El Clasico, so we were confident in a win regardless.

Hoping on the metro a couple hours before kickoff we joined up with a 20-some strong Slovenian Penya contingent and made our way to our seats in time to boo Real Madrid players as they came out to warm up and cheer on the Barcelona players as they came out to stretch. Armed with a camera and my piece of the nearly 100.000 strong mosaic I watched on as the players got ready and returned to their dressing rooms for a couple of minutes before returning to the collective singing of the Cant del Barça, FC Barcelona's anthem. I've been to a few Barcelona games before, including an El Clasico, but the singing this time around, combined with the stunning mosaic made this the best build up to a Barcelona game I have ever witnessed.

Sadly, the cheering had only one way to go from there - down. And it went way down. My first El Clasico was a loss and the atmosphere at the Camp Nou then was much better than on this day. Granted, we largely played a poor game on this rain-free night, but sometimes the lift in play can come from the stands, but, sadly, this crowd was not up to the task. There were people that didn't even jump out of their seats on goals scored by Barcelona - and I'm not talking about the few hundred Real Madrid fans.

A crowd of 98.700 should be loud enough to force all the nearby birds to fly 5 miles away from the Camp Nou, but apart from the Barcelona goals and a couple strong chants late in the game the crowd was largely disappointing. Considering I was barely able to speak later that night because of all the screaming (and cursing of Neymar) I did, I think I have the right to call out all those that didn't offer the support the team playing in front of them deserved. The spectators were probably consistently the loudest on occasions when Cristiano Ronaldo touched the ball. Boos were flying in from all sides of the stadium then. The calma celebration just fired everybody even more.

I was sitting in sector 351, which is located right behind the North goal, the side that only one of the goals were scored on, and I had a perfect view of it all the way. The swinging cross from Lionel Messi from the left side, Jeremy Mathieu escaping his marker, before finishing the chance off with a perfect header. But that doesn't mean I didn't see the plays that happened on the other side of the pitch. Thankfully my eyesight isn't as bad a Lahoz's is as even I saw how many mistakes he made and I was sitting about 80 yards from some of them.

Even though Neymar missed the most chances, none of them made me feel the agony as Messi's miss did. It's not because he missed a sitter or anything, the reason behind it was that he dribbled past numerous defenders before making his way to the middle and firing not a foot wide of Iker Casillas' right post. It was because that immediately after he started the run it reminded me of so many gorgeous goals he scored from similar plays, and with the form he was in games past me, and just everybody at the Camp Nou, expected that ball to finish in the back of the net.

It wasn't to be on that play, but Luis Suarez was there to rescue Barcelona with his brilliant control and finish after a stunning Dani Alves pass to cause an eruption at the stadium. With Real Madrid fading, especially compared to the first half, and Barcelona picking up speed everybody started waiting for the goal that would secure the win and put Barcelona level on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Sadly, the misses kept adding on for Barcelona who continued to waste chance after chance. Neymar was the main culprit as to why Barcelona only won by a single goal, but other also drew profanities from the Camp Nou crowd. It's difficult to explain how in the two minute onslaught in the dying minutes of the game none of Jordi Alba, Suarez or Messi managed to find the back of the net.

But had it not been for Claudio Bravo it could've ended much worse for Barcelona. Bravo was especially dominant in the second half where I once again had a great view of the action. His two saves on Karim Benzema could simply be called "point-savers". From my point of view the second one looked especially impressive. Set up for a shot before it was deflected on its way it looked like the ball would squeak just inside Bravo's left post, but fully outstretch the Chilean tipped the ball out of danger.

The final whistle provided the opportunity to breathe a sigh of relief. The three points were in the bag, and even though there was a sour taste because of all the misses, Barcelona still won the El Clasico. A task they failed miserably at earlier in the season. A drink to calm the nerves and analyze the game were now on the docket.

The following day was the nicest of the five days I was Barcelona. The morning afterglow of the El Clasico win and the sun was shining. I was on my way to the Museum to relive some of the greatest moments in Barcelona history and go down to the sacred ground, the ground that Barcelona defeated Real Madrid on not 24 hours ago. Those that haven't been on the full Camp Nou Tour, I fully recommend it, it is absolutely worth the money. Monday was the last full day in Barcelona as the flight home was the only thing left to do in Barcelona.

The next morning as we were getting ready to fly back home when we found out about the unfortunate Germanwings flight 4U9525. I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of everybody involved. To us who use airplane travel only a couple of times every year flying will never feel as natural as driving in a car. On days like this that uneasy feeling of being at the mercy of the weather, the pilots, the mechanics, etc. are exacerbated. Travelling by airplane is still by far the safest method of travel, but occasionally tragedies do happen and when they do they are always hard to swallow. It added a very sad note to what was otherwise a great trip.

The El Clasico is a couple of days behind us, but with the international break in full swing it's a good time to look back at Barcelona's important win over their eternal rivals, Real Madrid, which stretched Barcelona's La Liga lead to four points. This time let's take a look at the game from a different perspective. Instead of watching it from the numerous TV camera angles, or through pictures taken by photographers with canon-like camera's sitting near the goal-line. This time take a look at the action on pictures taken by a dude sitting in sector 351 with a poor old compact camera.

A comprehensive, blow-by-blow recap of Barcelona's thrilling 2-1 El Clasico victory over Real Madrid at the Camp Nou

FC Barcelona rode their luck at times, but on balance were the better side in another exciting El Clasico showdown with Real Madrid, as a second-half winner from Luis Suarez secured a valuable three points for the Blaugrana. It had started so well at the Camp Nou as Jeremy Mathieu’s header appeared to send Barça on their way to a comfortable win. Alas, a Clasico is never that simple, is it?

Cristiano Ronaldo equalised with a composed finish in the first-half and it was then Real Madrid who threatened to run away with it at times. However, all that matters is how you finish and Barça were better in that respect with Suarez’ fine effort our just rewards for an improved second-half showing. Oh, and that four point lead atop La Liga headed into the international break. That too.

All the anticipation, all the pre-match build-up and expert analysis from the pundits – finally the wait was over. The time for talking had passed and it was time for El Clasico to begin. Culés from across the globe had flocked to the Camp Nou to cheer on the Blaugrana, hoping to inspire them to victory, hoping that we would avenge our humbling 1-3 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu and inflict misery on the visiting Madridistas.

Luis Enrique opted to name the same team that utterly dominated Manchester City in midweek; Sergio Busquets therefore had to make do with a place on the Barça bench as he returned from an ankle injury. Real Madrid also elected to field their strongest side – no surprises from Carlo Ancelotti as he kept the faith in his 4-3-3 system.

The pressure was on at the Camp Nou; which side would emerge victorious?

***

The two teams were greeted on the field by a raucous atmosphere at the Camp Nou, serenaded with an a capella version of the famous El Cant Del Barça. The hairs were standing up on the back of my neck and I was only sitting watching at home. Imagine the excitement, the adrenaline flowing through the veins of the Barcelona players. Full of confidence with 26 wins from their past 29 fixtures, and raring to go after such an incredible welcome – it was no surprise that Barça started the better side.

Luis Suarez and Andrés Iniesta combined to good effect with less than two minutes on the clock – a one-two between the pair resulted in the former lifting a cute ball over the top of the Real defense to release the latter. The angle was far too tight for a shot on goal, so naturally, Iniesta elected to cross. Prodding the ball in low, Iniesta invited Suarez to attack the ball and go for goal but it was his midfield colleague, Ivan Rakitić, who got to the pass first, although his effort went wide of the mark.

Moments later, Lionel Messi announced his arrival with a sensational nutmeg on a Real Madrid midfielder – reminiscent of his midweek escapades against Manchester City.

Barça were playing with a swagger, Madrid looked worried, yet it was the visitors who had created the first real chance on goal.

And what a chance it was; a direct, driving run by Marcelo caused panic at the heart of the Barcelona defense and a misstep by Jeremy Mathieu played the entire Real Madrid frontline on side. The recipient of Marcelo’s reverse pass was Karim Benzema, but despite his role as "nine" in the Madrid attack, the Frenchman was selfless and opted to play another pass, a lofted cross to the back-post where Cristiano Ronaldo was running in, unmarked and ready to pounce.

No-one was near him. The cross was perfectly-weighted, inviting a volley from the reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner. Claudio Bravo was scampering across goal, but even the Chilean had no chance – provided that Ronaldo could direct his effort on target. Alas, much to the relief of Mathieu and the Camp Nou crowd, Ronaldo fluffed his lines. Choked. A golden chance rattled away off the underside of the bar.

Barça had gotten away with it, but this was a wake-up call. We’d been the superior side in the opening stages of the match and we needed this to be reflected on the scoreboard.

Step forward Lionel Messi? No...maybe Neymar? No...how about Luis Suarez? Keep guessing...

Enter stage right, Jeremy Mathieu!?!

That’s right; the very same Mathieu who helped create Real Madrid’s chance was up at the other end, intent to leave his mark on the Clasico. In some respects, this was him atoning for Luis Enrique’s tactical blunder at the Bernabeu. Starting in his preferred central defensive position, Mathieu joined the likes of Suarez and Rakitić in the area to attack Barcelona’s latest set-piece.

It was free-kick from the left-flank, perhaps tailor-made for a right-footed delivery to curl the ball towards Iker Casillas and create panic in the Real Madrid backline. Well, unless you have Lionel Messi on your roster; the Argentine took the free-kick himself and his teasing delivery found the purposeful run of Mathieu who thundered home a header to bring the crowd to their feet.

Barcelona were ahead in El Clasico, not for the first time this season.

Before long, the Blaugrana had created chances that could have extended their lead – the most notable of which was Neymar’s gilt-edged chance on the half-hour. A loose aerial ball in the area prompted Gerard Piqué to contest with Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Pepe – only for none of the quartet to make contact with the ball.

The bounce was kind to Barcelona; the spin ensured that the loose ball found its way to Luis Suarez and whether the Uruguayan was going for goal, or aiming to find a teammate at the far post, his low cross/shot ended up at the feet of Neymar – who had the simplest of chances to finish to double Barça’s lead.

In theory.

Rather, what happened in reality was that the ball bounced up and Neymar’s "shot" turned into a miscontrol, a poor touch that quite literally gifted the ball back to Real Madrid and into the welcoming arms of Iker Casillas.

A golden chance, wasted. Oh, how Barcelona would come to rue and regret that miss as just moments later Real Madrid found an equaliser.

Maybe it had been coming? The warning signs had been there at least as another driving run, this time by Luka Modric, again right at the heart of the Barcelona defense caused panic and the Croatian midfielder offloaded the ball to Karim Benzema. What followed next was a moment of pure genius, complete and total brilliance from the Frenchman as he immediately helped it on with a sensational backheel.

Barça were caught off-guard. Gerard Piqué was rightfully wrong-footed and Cristiano Ronaldo, somewhat akin to a juggernaut, raced onto the pass and stabbed the ball past Claudio Bravo to stick a knife into the heart of Culés across the world. Calma, calma; Ronaldo was here...much to the chagrin of the Camp Nou crowd, Real were level.

In some respects, Madrid utilised that equaliser to finish the half in the ascendancy. They were creating more chances, stopping the Blaugrana from monopolising possession, or even gaining a slight lead in that particular battle. As the half drew to a conclusion, the possession was split 50:50, much like this match was finely poised and ready to turn at any moment.

For one brief second, it seemed as though Real Madrid had completed their comeback. Gareth Bale had the ball in the back of the net, converting from close range after a flick-on from Ronaldo, yet their joy was short-lived; the assistant referee was flagging for offside and Barça could breath another sigh of relief. Replays proved that Bale was onside when Ronaldo headed the ball on, but replays also suggested that Ronaldo was marginally offside when the cross was initially played in.

A tough call, but one that I feel the referee got right. But hey, I’m biased!

Claudio Bravo finished the half by tipping over a long-range rocket from Ronaldo as Barça clung on until the interval, riding Gerard Piqué’s incredible form as the Catalan centre-half performed not one, but two world-class sliding challenges to stop Bale and Ronaldo in full-flight. We had started the better side, but now it was Real who were dominating proceedings.

Where had we heard this story before? Indeed, would tonight have the same ending, or have Barcelona really learned from their mistakes on that October night?

***

Still, it wasn’t all bad. The two teams were still tied, so even if Madrid have probably edged the first-half, they hadn’t made us pay where it really counts. Not that they wouldn’t try in the second-half; within minutes of the restart the visitors had created another good chance and this time Barcelona had Bravo to thank for keeping Benzema at bay. It was an intricate move on the counter-attack, probably the best of the match as Ronaldo and Karim combined for a shot on goal, but Bravo was ready to make a fine save.

At the other end of the field, Barça weren’t creating much, but they were prompting a few poor challenges from the Madrid line-up. Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Luka Modric had all picked up a caution before the 53rd minute for various bad fouls, while quite laughably, Ronaldo had also earned himself a yellow for a blatant dive. See, that’s what we had been reduced to – celebrating yellow cards, because plainly our football wasn’t giving us much to shout about.

With our control of possession a key concern, Xavi began to warm up in response. As it turns out, we didn’t need him.

All we needed was Dani Alves and his vision to pick out the run of Luis Suarez, who had split the Real Madrid defenders with his world-class movement. Ramos was playing him onside. Pepe was too slow to react and catch-up; the former Liverpool star was clean through and how about the finish? A far cry from his start to life in Catalunya, this Suarez had ice running through his veins to coolly slot the ball past the onrushing Iker Casillas. Less than an hour played at the Camp Nou and Barça were back ahead.

Hopefully this time it would be for good.

With a goal advantage, Barça continued to play the kind of disjointed football that we had previously seen in the opening hour of the match, although tellingly, Real Madrid lost their confidence. No longer were they in the ascendancy; they could barely string a few passes together at times and the game began to breakdown with multiple stoppages.

As always in El Clasico, the referee had a tough job determining where fouls had actually occurred and where the individuals were "exaggerating" to try and gain an advantage. Someone is bound to be outraged by some of the decisions, so Antonio Mateu Lahoz couldn’t really win – but let’s focus on the football.

A sublime run by Neymar on the counter-attack left a flurry of Madrid defenders trailing in his wake. It was a wonder goal in the making – so one could probably forgive Neymar for ignoring Suarez and going for goal himself. Unfortunately, his finish wasn’t up to the standard and a good chance went blazing over the bar.

Minutes later, Messi went close with an effort of his own – a trademark curling effort from the edge of the area that went inches wide of Casillas’ far post. Barça were pressing for a third and were creating the chances to grab it, but in a repeat of Wednesday’s performance, our profligacy in front of goal was back with a vengeance.

Another chance, another Neymar miss. This time Messi elected to hand him the chance ahead of Suarez and when the Brazilian sliced the ball wide, Suarez displayed his displeasure in a not dissimilar fashion to a Ronaldo tantrum. No harm, no foul though. Now it was time for changes for both camps – Raphael Varane replaced Pepe in the heart of the Real defense, while Sergio Busquets and Xavi entered the action to try and provide some midfield stability in place of Ivan Rakitić and Andrés Iniesta respectively.

Jese also came on, replacing Isco as Carlo Ancelotti contemplated going for broke. Real’s La Liga title hopes stood to take a significant blow with a Barcelona victory, but the threat of a third kept him from putting all his eggs into an all out attack-shaped basket.

Neymar paid the price for all his misses by being replaced by Rafinha with a little over five minutes left to go. Luis Enrique was embracing pragmatism in a bid to secure these three points, and I for one didn’t care one iota. The result was all that was important – not the 4-3-3. We would still push forward, just with fewer numbers and sure enough, we still created chances.

This time however our accuracy was good, but Iker Casillas was on hand to play the saviour for Real Madrid. Another fabulous Messi pass created the first opportunity while Jordi Alba’s electric pace and exemplary first touch created the shot – a prodded effort that was kept out well by San Iker. Moments later, Alba and Messi switched roles as the former created a chance for the latter – but the end result was the same: another tremendous save from Casillas.

With only a few minutes remaining in regulation, Real Madrid were still in with a chance of snatching a draw – all thanks to Iker Casillas. A couple of corners could have provided them with an equaliser, but two shoddy deliveries robbed them of that opportunity, Barça got their foot on the ball and played out the rest of the clock. The victory was secure – a four point lead at the top of La Liga was our reward.

Visca el Barça!

The time is almost upon us; kick-off is drawing ever closer at the Camp Nou and FC Barcelona could be just hours away from extending their lead at the top of La Liga to four points. Or, they might be hours away from conceding top spot and another loss against Real Madrid. At this point, the match appears as though it will be finely poised. Both sides possess oodles of quality in their ranks. Superstar players will grace the field at every position and as such, this match could be won or lost in a single instant.

Barça will be hoping that their key names are firing on all cylinders; Lionel Messi looked to be in majestic against Manchester City in midweek and a repeat performance would surely inspire the Blaugrana to victory in this Clasico. Likewise, another goal-laden display from either Luis Suarez or Neymar would move us that one step closer to a win as well; although even then, you never quite know up against Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale.

Not sure how you're going to watch the big match later?
It's the biggest match of the season so far, and FC Barcelona have responded in kind by naming their strongest squad of the season. Sergio Busquets has received medical clearance to make his comeback from injury after spending three weeks on the sidelines nursing a heavy knock to his ankle, and there's a possibility that he will slot right-back into the starting line-up at the expense of Jeremy Mathieu, enabling Javier Mascherano to return to his customary centre-half position.

On the other hand, this might be a bluff; Busquets might sit on the bench and Barça could continue as they did against Manchester City. Certainly, it worked well enough for us then, why not tonight against Real Madrid as well?

Playing for the chance to extend our lead atop La Liga to four points should be motivation enough for our squad, but we also have the added incentive of avenging our humbling 1-3 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this season, not to mention last season's Copa del Rey final heartbreak. Come on guys, let's get the job done, let's win El Clasico!

These are the eighteen men named by Lucho for the game:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Claudio Bravo

Defenders: 3. Gerard Piqué, 14. Javier Mascherano, 15. Marc Bartra, 18. Jordi Alba, 21. Adriano Correia, 22. Dani Alves, 24. Jérémy Mathieu

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 6. Xavi Hernández, 8. Andrés Iniesta, 12. Rafinha Alcântara

Forwards: 7. Pedro Rodríguez, 9. Luis Suárez, 10. Lionel Messi, 11. Neymar Jr.

Expected Starting Lineup (4-3-3):

Bravo; Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Messi, Suarez, Neymar

The match starts at 21:00 CET, and you can follow and comment all the action right here, at Barça Blaugranes.

VISCA EL BARÇA!

A chance to predict the score of tonight's El Clasico showdown between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou

Beware the wounded animal. FC Barcelona enter tonight's Clasico as favourites following Real Madrid's recent downturn in form, a fact that is encouraging many Cules to make increasingly bold and/or arrogant predictions for the match ahead. A repeat of the Manita isn't impossible, yet to suggest it's probable? It doesn't make sense -- Real Madrid remain one of the best sides in football and this match will be anything but a walk in the park.

Quite the opposite; Los Blancos have had our number in the past few Clasicos and while that may be a change from the trend displayed over the past couple of years, that's the only form guide we should be concerning ourself with. After all, Real Madrid won't be facing FC Schalke 04 again; they're facing FC Barcelona and we represent an entirely different proposition. Different strengths, different weaknesses -- who knows? Maybe our strengths and weaknesses will still play into Carlo Ancelotti's hands?

Or maybe, just maybe, our confidence is well-placed. We can beat Real Madrid and if we were ever going to do it, it would be now. Lionel Messi is playing like a man possessed. Luis Suarez has found form. Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic have formed a formidable midfield partnership, while our defense ranks amongst the best in Europe. All the factors we need to grab a win are on our side: can we take advantage and extend our lead at the top of La Liga?

Predict the score of tonight's El Clasico by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!
